They're both great! Just sell the older one in game for less money than the "newer" model since it is smaller and has less cargo capacity and let's face it, looks like it'd be used for more piracy than the newer model too. I'm definitely not a developer and I'm not suggesting this would be easy or hard to put/keep in the game.. I would just love to be to own both versions. :-p

Starmap suggestions

Hey folks!

After playing hours upon hours in the PTU, I noticed a couple of things that could be done better.

Here is my problem:

The overall experience of using the starmap in the Mobiglas is not implemented all that well.

I have to work really hard to find, for example Delamar, which is really far away if you open the Starmap at the beginning of a session and the overall questpoints aren't all that visible.

Here is my solution:

The map can still be used as you do right now, but I added a couple more features:


  • A border around the Starmap, so you know where you can drag it around and where you can't.

  • A drop-down menu so you don't have to drag it around at all.

  • Coloured markers for quests and a box in the bottom left corner displaying all active quests. After selecting a destination that box will switch to other information.

  • "Set as Destination" button in the bottom right corner, because it's a more common location for the final button you press in a menu.

  • You can select a star system on the top of the Starmap

I'd really like to buy a copy - but the shipping cost is MORE THAN THE book.

There have been an exceptional number of physics-related facepalm moments in the last two Around the Verse episodes, including my personal favourite of "burning up leaving the atmosphere". They say they want it more fun than realistic, but good luck making something even slightly immersive if you don't understand what re-entry even is.

How many months now have we had EVA with friction in space?

How long have we had a distinct lack of conserved momentum between physics grids?

It's not that these things are delayed. They aren't noticed by CIG as being massive gaping flaws in the physics model.

Oh yeah, try flying around a planet. You have to tilt the nose down to not fly directly into space.

Should Big Spaceships Float Over Planets? Is the Flight Model Broken? let's do some math.

Everyone seems to have an opinion on planetary flight models, but i doubt anybody has done the math. So, let's get to it and end the speculation.

First, let's pick the heaviest and lightest in-game ships. The starfarer (3,500,000kg) and the Mustang (40,000kg). (The Pioneer is 10x heavier but not in-game yet.)

Second let's estimate the Force produced by the auxiliary thrusters by calculating how long it takes the ships to go from .4C to Zero after warp speed. I got about 4 sec of deceleration but just to be safe, we'll say 10 sec just to account for a future balance pass. (note that this more than halfs the calculated thruster strength) (also note that we use deceleration bc floating over a planet looks the coolest if you're not using you're main thrusters)(also note general relativity is still pretty negligible at .4c so i won't get into that.)

Thirdly calculate force in newtons: F(starfarer)= [.4(3108)m/s * 3,500,000kg]/10sec = 4.21013N

F(Mustang)= [.4(3108)m/s * 40,000kg]/10sec = 4.81011N

These numbers are huge! For reference the Saturn 5 produced just 3.4*107. That means you have the equivalent of 14 THOUSAND Saturn 5 rockets being used to maneuver and float over a planet.

I can still hear people saying, "what about massive planets?" So let's calculate the force of gravity of a planet like earth (6*1024kg), we'll assume a radius of .5 =m;a initial distance of 6.38 million meters, and calculate how close you would have to be before your auxiliary thrusters would be overtaken by the force of gravity.

F(gravity on starfarer) = (6.6710-11)(61024)3,500,000/[6.38106]2 = 3.44107N

F(gravity on Mustang) = (6.6710-11)(61024)40,000/[6.38106]2 = 3.93105N

F(Starfarer)>F(Gravity on Starfarer) F(mustang)>F(Gravity on Mustang)

Therefore, these spaceships can without a doubt Hover in place.(even upsidedown or with a planet twice the mass of earth) In fact they could get just 5.75km away from center of gravity if earth was as small as a neutron star!

so, the next time a neck bearded armchair physicist says spaceships shouldn't be able to hover over a planet because "gravity" tell them to shut the hell up and explain to you how a spaceship can reach 40% the speed of light in 10 seconds. That should stop the pedants.

TL;DR: Atmospheric flight models check out, and besides the most unrealistic concept by FAR is quantuum travel. So, if you can swallow that (which every sci-fi nerd has already) then you should be able to accept Ultra-heavy spaceships flying in-atmosphere.
