Hello,

I was wanting to do a mockup of some of the SC assets (the grey, textureless, assets.)

Where/How do I get these and what application would I need to use to view them?

Essentially, I need to know how to do a side by side comparison of two or more ships from different angles.

Should there be a fuel penalty for flying within an atmosphere?

Title says it all, larger the ship, the greater the penalty.

Would make sense to keep those giant ships from hovering around like cockroaches and having an unfair advantage in planet warfare.

3.0.0 Progress Watch - Update 2017-12-15

Hello there !

This week on the Progress Watch, bugfixing, performances and balancing are pretty much the only things left to do before the release of 3.0.0. While this isn't the most exciting part of the development, it's certainly the one that will make the game actually be fun to play.

Also, we've seen that the infamous "range based update culling" isn't quite ready for time yet. But don't worry, the team is still working on it, as we'll see below.

3.0.0 Progress Watch

This week's bug fixing count drops back to the average with 49 bugfixes.

Let's now see what CIG's been doing during the week :

  • While several bug fixes are in progress for the Cargo system, this work is done for the most part.
  • The team continues to work on polishing the flow of the various missions and how they work together with relevant NPCs.
  • We’re updating Ruto with some visual improvements and trying to track down a bug where both Eckhart and Ruto’s heads will snap back and forth between animations. Spooky
  • The new Combat Visor is in QA’s hands and undergoing rigorous testing.
  • Additional balance passes for Ship Health, Armor, and Shields have gone in this week and undergone QA testing.
  • With feature work on the StarMap to ShipRadar conversion completed, this has now been enabled in ships within 3.0.
  • The team has been able to resolve most of the use cases of the GravLev bikes banking too high when turning, this is now rarely occurring.
  • Due to the team focusing their efforts on fixing some spline bugfixing and IFCS issues, this will delay us looking into Drag, making it a greater risk of not making the release.
  • With work closing down on the PMA, the team have started to put more focus into working on the layout of the VMA and how best to present the data required.
  • The team worked on the range-based update culling on the server, but this is proving rather difficult and will likely need more coordinated work on the game side to get working properly.
  • Engineers also looked into the memory issues [...] one of them being too many job fibers are created which locally allocate stack space that amount to several 100 MB of memory.
  • On the GPU side, the team tuned render targets allocated for the RenderToTexture system which significantly reduced memory footprint.
  • The team will continue looking into performance aspects, so that we can ship the initial version of 3.0 without disastrous client performance.


3.0.0 is almost ready and the only thing missing for it to be a great success is performance. CIG is aware of that, and they won't release it without making sure it's an enjoyable experience for everyone.

I'm a backer since 2014 and have been checking in on the game periodically since then. In 3.0, is there a point to continuously playing the game yet? Or is it still more "Oh that's neat" features without meaningful rewards or objectives? Thanks!

Does anyone know if 3.0 is planned to have changes in cargo price so that someone can actually make money trading? Currently ferrying goods around is not particularly worthwhile and you can lose a lot in a game crash.
