I know its a long shot and I dont need actual numbers but recently I came into a discussion about STar Citizen yet again where my conversation partner claimed that it was well reported that CR has a big salary and has asked for more backing in newsletters as well as STar Citizen running out of money

Normally I would ignore stuff like that but if you look at CIG's size, equipment, shows, Citizencon, marketing and all that 175 million doesnt seem like much anymore

Is there anything into these claims? Any reports? Evidence?

I am scared that it will fail and CR will just retire with big money stacks

I have noticed lots of people with sub standard networks/hardware rig claiming the game is "unplayable". And a variety of playability levels for others based on these things. Yes, it's alpha, yes there is no optimization really and none of the true netcode is out there yet. But this got me thinking based on this wide range of playablity based on the game. We've been told from day one this game will stretch the limits of hardware and is meant for high end computing (at least what was considered that 3 years ago).

But when the game is fully optimized, the network to servers fully functional, and the servers stable - what then when players are on the "edge of playablity"? For there will be an "edge". Sure it may not be as glaring as it is now after they solve the optimization and most of the server bugs etc. - but it will be there and players will be dancing along this "edge" of playability.

I can see this impacting who I hire for crew. Question is - how do I know they are underpowered in their local setup (crap network, crap hardware, or overloading their system or netork locally doing other stuff)? Because there will absolutely be critical crew seats controlling shields, power, and other things where reaction time will be a factor. If I have a well trained player crew and we are fighting a single ship - I expect the shield guy to be moving the shield strength toward the enemy constantly adjusting when they are at distance - and balancing when they are close in and that is not realistically possible. I expect to have the power management to go to shields or weapons in a constant balancing act either to max defense or offense as the need dictates in a fluid situation. And other similar things.

A player with crap going on locally - will not be able to do these things reliably. Will we have to test prospective crew in some sort of "how fast and reliably can you operate" situation? I'm not talking skill. That is a whole other level of "thing". I'm talking level playing field - they need to be able to operate the game at speeds others are doing. The bar will be set at X and ideally all players can reach that minimum standard local network/computing reaction time. Fast rigs/networks won't give an advantage as the game servers will have throttles - but slower rigs/networks that fall under this minimum will give a disadvantage.

So how to insure a prosective players crew is not one of these players we see today in alpha that have local issues. I'm not interested in their telling me that it's "the game" when I can clearly see that is not the case - I'm interested in crew that can function at the playability level.

And anyone who states there will not be a raft of players that try and skirt the "edge" - has not been paying attention around here. There will be - even at go live. Its a never ending issue.

I ponder this about player crew.

Do I only allow crew I'm familiar with personally?

Do I only allow crew I've tested for the minimum reaction times?

Do I only use NPC crew?

I'll grant you this - NPC crew will never suffer that sort of drawback.

It's why NPC's rule the verse. They are the master race -_-

Funny Bug Workaround Story

So I was picking up some Laranite at Daymar to deliver to Olisar when I guy posted in chat he couldn't access the elevator in Hangar One of Levski. So I went over to help, parked outside and went down, lo and behold it didn't work for me either.

So I came up with the idea, since the doors to Hangar 1 were still open, to fly down, pick the guy up and fly him to the exterior entrances. Fly down, of course the landing guy cries foul cause I don't have permission and threatens to send me to storage. I sprint back to the ramp, lower it, sprint back to the cockpit, and just as I do it gets sent to storage.

The best part though, is we both get sent to the living quarters in Levski. So he still got inside, and I was able to sell my cargo at like 2x the profit I would have made at Olisar. The criminal rating went away quickly lol.

The bugs are often annoying, but sometimes the best part of the PU is working together to beat them! Also, this I suppose can be considered a workaround for a broken elevator. :p

So I followed most of the tips in this article and the linked ones to improve performance. However, it seems like my system can't get more than 20-25fps. Now, you'll say it's in Alpha and optimisation is subpar and I'm aware but I'm not expecting 60fps, I'd be happy with 30.

CPU: i5-6600K @4.5GHz

RAM: 16GB

GPU: MSI R9 290 4GB (overclocked)

I use air cooling but I overclocked because I had really good temps.
