I just recently uninstalled the game due to feeling a bit drained and unmotivated to play anymore. I had a look at the road map and there are some pretty amazing stuff in store for us.

Figured I would bite the bullet and hold off. That way I will have so much to do when 3.5 comes out.

Maybe by then the performance will be a lot better. I’ll still check the subreddit, but I’ll distance myself because it can be quite addictive checking this sub lol

Here’s hoping they deliver 3.5 by Q1 2019.

How to escape a dogfighter with a big ship

So, in theory, if a dogfighter has enough firepower, and you are in a big ship you're screwed. Even with superior firepower, the dogfighter can circle around the big ship and kill it. So you can't win.

Well, that's true. But I didn't realize you can actually totally escape the fight.

I was in my Razor LX (so you can say it's a fast ship) and for some reason, I was dogfighting with a Reclaimer (so you can say it's a big ship).

So here is what did the Reclaimer pilot :

  • showed the back of the ship
  • maximum afterburner speed
  • decouple
  • turn back to me and was ready to fire


So here is what happened :

  • I can catch him because maintaining afterburner speed requires no trajectory correction, and essentially flying in a straight path which means death because of the forward firepower of the Reclaimer
  • Even when I do little dodge and can pass him, I can't circle around him because I lose too much speed.


It ended by him stopping afterburner and returning to dogfight and me crashing on his hull. But anyway, I think this technic should be shared.

x64-based PC Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7820HK CPU @ 2.90GHz, 2901 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s) Intel(R) HD Graphics 630 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 107 Total Physical Memory 15.9 GB Total Virtual Memory 30.5 GB Page File Space 14.6 GB

Thank you for any help. I upgraded my RAM by 8 GB today and only saw a marginal (maybe an additional FPS) improvement.

Edit: Also, I am running it off my SSD. I should note that it loads almost instantaneously unlike before where it took >10 minutes to boot up.

Thought I could give trading a try - so I flew to the drug lab on Yela only to find that everything was sold out. I then waited a while for the stock to replenish, and spent everything I had on widow. I walk back to my ship (Connie) and call the elevator down, get on, and accidentally drop my gun whilst trying to ride the elevator back up. The gun glitches through the elevator floor and through the planet, then my ship explodes promptly after.

What lessons have I learned?

Was watching the
mini documentary over lunch and I was struck by a large number of parallels to SC dev.

  • Thought about for years before start
  • Even with F4 asset reuse, been under active work 4+ years
  • Needed to find the right network and multiplayer developers before the project could really work.
  • Problems grafting a network stack and data design for multiplayer onto an engine not designed for multiplayer
  • Opting to do that anyway rather than create new bespoke engine, deal with impact of that decision (including struggling with legacy elements of the engine)
  • Still questions about how many people can be supported by server (F76 currently only handles 24-36 people) this far into dev.
  • Working through all the details multiplayer adds
  • Need large areas if going to make a multiplayer game world you can really live in
  • start with the map, work down
  • Still deciding details of and implementing key play mechanics 5 months before launch / 4+ years into dev
  • 'It's easy to second guess and come up with reasons not to do something, but then you end up not doing anything. Try it. See if it works. Iterate.' - Todd Howard
  • Area the size of West Virginia is larger than their prior games - needed new tech to populate it (procedurally create create woods and other biomes).
  • Survival elements add motivations, but too much isn't fun
  • Even today, 5 months before launch, they are still deciding what the live model for sustaining the servers and post-release content will be (cosmetic microtransactions, etc) and if it will work
  • Starfield is stated as Todd Howards 'wanted to do it forever' project. (analog to CR/SC)
  • 'Fans want these things, but they take a long time and we cannot answer everything in the beginning'. Expectation management is hard.


There were many other parallels, but these really jumped out at me.
