So this is how a bolt action works. Give it has two barrels AND a side loading mag. I don't get how the bolt would ever work. I'm ok with the gun itself but CIG please, at least let it make mechanical sense.

The “Scalpel” misses the mark

Preface – I know the game is development and things change, here’s a criticism/opinion of a present thing that may become irrelevant in the future.

With the newest ATV looking at the Kastak Arms “Scapel” Sniper Rifle, we can finally get a real first impression of what this weapon is like. It is aesthetically pleasing and super space game like; it really fits the Kastak aesthetic and looks powerful. However, looks and sounds are not everything; the function of this weapon is confusing. I’m a gun nut, but I won’t go into a bunch of detail. I’ll just look at it from a gameplay point of view and keep it as tidbit free as possible.

The Scalpel has a long recoil ejection system, manual loading via a bolt, a side loading magazine that feeds linearly, and 2 firing modes (single, and 2 round staggered burst). While this makes the gun unique, it also makes it impractical, and I do not think that it serves its purpose well (unless it’s simply meant to be an overly complicated and impractical weapon).

So why is it impractical? - It has a lot of systems that don’t interact with one another when they could, and actually work against one another. Here’s 3 points about that, and that’s all I’ll say.

  • Long recoil ejection system and manual bolting


The long recoil system is very effective at soaking up recoil energy, so that makes it a fairly fitting choice for a large caliber rifle with long barrels in a video game. Combining an auto-ejecting/loading system that is used in the world today, and taking out the loading part, is not a cohesive design, though. Imagine you have an AK47. You fire it, the bolt comes back and the casing is ejected from the cartridge you fired, then the bolt moves forward and a new round is loaded in from the magazine. Now imagine you have a Scalpel AK47. You fire it, the bolt moves back and a casing is ejected, but when the bolt moves forward the next round is not loaded. You then manually pull the bolt back again yourself and load the next round. You’re doing twice the necessary work for the same result, it’s redundant. Make it manual eject/load, or auto-loading, not both, it’s an oxymoron.

Example: Recoil System and Loading



There are two columns of cartridges in the magazine, and it looks like it feeds on both sides at once. The gun is capable of ejecting one casing at a time, so if the manual bolt system was dropped and this gun was made to be an auto-loading rifle, it could make use of this system better. On single shot mode one barrel would recoil, eject and load while the other barrel was ready to fire still. This would give it a higher rate of fire and would still make sense for the dual-shot mode.

  • The 2 shot staggered burst firing mode


I can understand if the designers of this gun wanted to gimp it so that it couldn’t dual headshot/bodyshot/instakill someone because they thought it was OP. It doesn’t make sense, though. Why would you take a semi-manual loading dual barrel long rifle that has so much recoil that the whole barrel system must come back as well as make use of a springed butt pad on the stock if you couldn’t kill someone with a well-placed single shot? With all the talk of recoil and offset for the 2nd shot that was talked about in ATV, it seems like this solely exists for you to hit with one shot at range and miss with the other so that you waste ammo, or it’s for last resort CQB.

Dual shot mode would be much better if it fired both barrels at once and hit the mark with hardly any offset. If this was an auto-loading rifle I’d never use the 2 round staggered burst as is; I would fire one shot after the other waiting for my sight picture to come back. Even if it was a manual bolt rifle I would not use 2 shot staggered burst as I can click twice on my mouse quickly to get nearly the same outcome.

Conclusion: The Designers spent a lot of time on this gun giving it an iconic dual barrel look, and it looks very cool. I feel that it is overly impractical in how it currently functions. It should either be manual action only, or autoloading action only, not the worse half of both. 2 shot burst mode could be removed, or improved to be dual shot to actually make use of the 2 barrels on the gun.

Anything after this line is supplementary.

Neat things about the gun:


  • Holds 8 shots.

  • Butt Stock adjustable, has recoil dampening.

  • Long recoil system good for recoil dampening (Think Barrett M82).

  • Butthole stock is strong design for heavy recoil weapons.


(Bonus info: Why are bolt action rifles made today? 1.) Energy is not being used from the cartridge to eject the casing, it’s all used on the bullet. A bolt action gun will have more power than an auto-loading gun shooting the same ammo with the same length of barrel. 2.) They are quieter than auto-loading rifles when suppressed. Autoloading actions are louder, and they let gas escape as the bolt moves during the cycling process, which is even louder. Suppressors make gas coming out of the barrel quieter, but gas coming out of the chamber or gas tube is not suppressed.)

The Devastator shotgun comes to mind, if I recall it's got a horrible spread, short range and tremendous damage but still effectively a shotgun that fires giant pellets.

Where you could have something very functionally similar in range, damage, etc but instead looking like
in how it executes that function. Rather than a spray of pellets, a blast of electrically charged plasma that peters out over a range.

Same effective range, far more satisfying and intimidating. Still feasible human tech.
