I've been giving a bit of thought to the state of EVA lately, as well as the push/pull mechanics which were announced, presented, even partially implemented but seemingly abandoned of late. I wanted to create an overview of what we know about those elements, and to present why I personally think that there are reasons to believe that this feature is gone but not forgotten.

SATABall

Obviously this whole issue is bound up with the whole SATABall/IllFonic debacle, so it's worth providing some info on that. It seems as though after Illfonic's Star Marine build shit the bed, it provoked a major rethink of the FPS mechanics. While they retained quite a lot of ILLFonic's work for them, it became apparent that the more complex version of the EVA mechanics, complete with its own module and equipment (the gravity-beam attachment), were not going to make it into the intial release. That said, it was
SATABall was not a particularly fun game mode and they weren't all that enamoured of the direction that it was going. There might be EVA specific maps down the road for SM though, with "Much better FPS and EVA action than where that was heading". None the less,
and as a result will likely feature in the game. But what SATABall actually is, is probably not set in stone.

Push/Pull

This system governing a player's ability to grab objects to slow and control their movement in EVA, as well as being able to push off of surfaces did have some early implementation back in alpha 1.1, but it was clearly a highly imperfect system. We also saw push/pull as part of a canned animation which was
back in 2015. Here's hoping that the canned animation was representative of what they have planned for the finished thing.

Magboots

These were a feature of some
of the game, but they abandoned it later on, it seems because of concerns

we had Johnny Jacivious explain that the magboots' functionality will be replaced with a much less cumbersome version of that functionality handled by an avatar's EVA pack called align to surface.

Procedural IK

At Citcon last year, beyond the sights, sounds and stench of ArcCorp and Hurston, we had Ivo Herzeg steal the show with his
. This leads me to think that for the geometry issue for magboots, working with the new paradigm of align to surface, will no longer be a problem. And perhaps push/pull will be Ivo's new field of focus?

On to the Rampant Speculation!

My guess is that the align to surface system will allow a player's EVA pack to simulate 1g on any surface. Providing sufficent traction to run and sprint, rather than just slowly shuffle along (as with the former magboot system), any given surface and over any form of geometry with only minor changes to Ivo's existing foot alignment tech.

But this will be a fluid system in which you'll need to approach things from the right angle and at a sufficiently low speed, and I'm thinking that this is where the procedural IK will come into play. If you're aligned correctly you'll hit the ground running so to speak, and keep up your speed. If the angle is too steep, out of aligment, or too fast, then you'll use your hands and feet to absorb the impact as best you can to arrest your momentum. And there is potential for taking collision damage and bouncing off of the surface altogether.

I'm also guessing that CIG will implement the push part of push/pull in a way that evokes ILLFonic's original notion of a
. While aligned to a surface, whether that's running or standing, you'll be able to compress and push off of that surface with your legs by aiming at another surface and jumping. Not a million miles away from this mechanic in
except it being much more fluid and having the ability to guide yourself mid-flight using your EVA pack. Pushing would allow for faster acceleration than an EVA pack, and players would benefit from learning to move quickly and efficently from surface to surface, using their thrusters to guide and correct their movements rather than relying on them alone.

What do you think? Of course this is all highly speculative, but I see a number of reasons to think that this is the direction that they are going with it. I think that in time we'll see the EVA mechanics become its own unique skillset that you need to master with experience. Something fundamentally different from fighting in true gravity and flexible enough to apply to the PU as much as its own sub-module of SM. Do you think that there are any major technical hurdles in CIG achieving this? Perhaps some concerns about how this might fit with the existing gameplay? What are your thoughts on how CIG ought to tackle EVA mechanics in general, aside from my flights of fancy about them?

3.2 is still really unplayable (for me)

I thought I would just post this because I'm frustrated as the game for me is still really unplayable. I saw a couple of posts where people were celebrating the patch and stuff but I've hardly had a good experience so far. Whenever I try and give it a go, bugs and such really prevent me from doing any missions whatsoever. Here is a couple of the most annoying / game breaking I experience: -Mobi glass opens and closes over and over -In Zero-G if my character as much as lightly touches an object he will get spinned and knocked around like as if he was an inflatable -Glitching into the ceiling or falling through the Reliant happens too often and can force a respawn and I'll have to abandon a mission if it's cargo. -General server lag and crashes

I don't want this to sound like bitching but it feels like even though new content is added (adding weapons to ships for example which is something a really want to do since the standard reliant sucks in combat) I can't access any of it in the game's current state. I completely understand that the game is in development and time is not being invested into polishing the experience until beta I'm not denying that

After weeks of finding good joysticks, configuring them, watching youtube videos and really nice help from Isle if Hope Corporation I am finally ready to start playing the first time!

Setup will get major changes one day... but not now. Don't want to spend any more money to get a new table (because it's still a working space).

[Discussion] Spacesuit always on...?

Hello!

We all wear space suits in Star Citizens and we do it all the time. My question really is: Is this "Spacesuit always on"-culture something we want?

The reason I ask is because it feels a bit off to me, even more so when I reflect on most popular SciFi movies:

  • Star Wars
  • Star Trek
  • Babylon 5
  • Firefly
  • The Expanse
  • Aliens


Come to think of it, I am hard pressed to think of any SciFi movie or game where you constantly wear your space suit.

Obviously nothing prevents any of us from just going with things how they are and embracing constant space-suiting. But then I really think I ought to question why ship designs are all seemingly for a crew that aren't wearing space suits...

Beds are real beds not space-suit beds, showers are real showers not space-suit showers, life-support is setup to support non-spacesuit crew in all cases, canteens are real canteens not space-suit canteens...The Reclaimer even has spacesuits lined up at it's airlocks which makes me uncomfortable as I'm immediately thinking "But I'm already wearing one and so is everyone else... :-/"

Personally I don't think I mind having my spacesuit always one, I just feel as though we ought to go with a theme somehow that is a bit more coherent. That's all.

What do you think?

I've only got like 90 GB left on my M.2, but it didn't say anything about how much space it needs. I got a really slow connection speed, downloading the base pack right now and that's probably taking another 20 hours or so.

Asking this because I don't want to end up having to install it somewhere else and then redownload everything for serveral days again.

Why do some objects not seem to be covered by fire or dust or other effects? Just show up contrasting with the stuff that is covered?

Maybe I’m not explaining it right but if you go into third person while entering atmosphere and look through the fire you can see your helmet much darker and more visible as if the effects don’t do anything to it
