We Need to See CR (and Sandi) More...
Post at: Fr 31. Jul 2020, 14:58
By /u/Capt_Twizzler

This year I’ve been lurking on here more than playing the game. Seems like drama/anger is at a roiling boil. Made me think, I haven’t seen Chris Roberts (or Sandi) anywhere in months. I mention Sandi bc her personality and positivity would be a welcome addition with everything going on. And of course I mention CR bc this is his baby. Having them in front of the camera (even if it is just to take the heat) would be a good PR move.

Iterative Development: Why doesn’t CIG release many small patches instead of a few patches a year?
Post at: Fr 31. Jul 2020, 16:09
By /u/qui_tam_gogh

I’m not in development, but I know a bit about project and change management.

Given the scope and complexity of the interplay of the various systems of this game, my question for the software devs out there is: why wouldn’t you want to make many small changes instead of a few major changes? 3.10 example:

The mobiglass trading app could implemented without the ROC. So why isn’t it live a month ago?

Major systems (like flight) require a lot more massive changes at the sam time obviously, but flight mechanics don’t have anything to do with massive overhauls to the UI.

If feels like you could release patches almost weekly with all of the systems, contents, and mechanics they’re constantly adding or tweaking, and we’d be able to get them tested (or pulled back) more quickly than the current process of bundling unrelated update into major complex quarterly patches.

They must have reasons, but to me it’s not apparent what they must be.

Ideas?

Distortion damage on 3.10(PTU) Is it working as intended yet?
Post at: Fr 31. Jul 2020, 16:15
By /u/Tykennn

I know in 3.9 distortion weapons, and what they would do to ships was a complete toss-up. Some distortion weapons only did 10% of the "damage" that they should have been doing. And while distortion would work against some ships, it wouldn't work against others.

Although as a sidebar, I've noticed some disagreements on what distortion actually does to a ship. Some people say it drains the energy of components on a ship, other people say it overloads the coolers. If you're able to answer that question as well that would be fantastic!

Is there a way to find out if Star Citizen is using your 32GB of RAM instead of 16GB or less?
Post at: Fr 31. Jul 2020, 16:19
By /u/mahkahdamian

I apologize if this is a stupid question. I've seen countless complaints about this before where people with 16GB of RAM find out that Star Citizen is only utilizing the power of their 8GB instead of 16GB of RAM. I just wanted to know:

[*]

There's a way to find out that Star Citizen is taking full advantage of the 32GB of RAM.

[*]

If it's not, how to fix that.

[/list]

Thank you in advance.

"Mr. CTO" is back with: An argument for polishing the "alpha"
Post at: Fr 31. Jul 2020, 16:56
By /u/BenywhopCumbersnip

TLDR; This isn't a "game" yet - but it could be. We're going to have to wait a lot longer for what we were promised, so I would rather have a polished subset that I can enjoy more while I wait.

A stats page released in 2019 showed that Star Citizen had almost ten million hours of play time in as many months. (Jan - Oct 2019, not even the full year). To me, that's enough evidence to invalidate a lot of traditional arguments about what an "alpha" is, it's purpose/goals, etc.

Star Citizen fans are proving that they are beyond eager to play this game, whether or not it's ready to be one. If you think about the goal behind game development, it seems like you could boil it down to: what will it take to transform this concept into something people will play?

Even it's it's buggy state, Star Citizen has already surpassed what most would call "lofty" sales and adoption goals for a new game company. Obviously, we want the fully realized dream that we were promised, but I personally would settle for a polished starting point followed by consistent iteration.

Think of how BIG the Stanton system is by itself. It's 5 AU, which is 1.119e+17 (aka 747989353) square kilometers - or 4.32e+16 (aka 464779036) square miles for us American folks. That's plenty of space to put content in - for now. We've proven to CIG that we don't need 110 systems to start playing, we're ready right now.

If you read one of the most commonly quoted posts in this sub: https://www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/comments/fd5su2/what_alpha_means_and_what_beta_means/

It points out that an alpha is "feature complete." This means a working, tested proof of concept for planned features. I don't think we're quite there yet - and a lot of underlying systems are being rebuilt/replaced. If they took the features they have now, added the ones that are close, polished them up and delivered us a stable + playable GAME - I for one would be more than happy with that starting point.

Now I have a tendency to carry on, and believe me I could. Instead, I'll finish by saying that there is a staggering amount of content that could fit into what we have already. Think of being able to customize every aspect of your ship appearance. Think of bounty missions where you have to raid an underground bunker full of baddies and bring back one in particular. Ok The point is that Chris Roberts is infamous for not being able to manage scope and reign himself in. It could be another decade before we get to a "launch". Meanwhile, we're going to be sitting here wanting to play this game so badly that we're willing to get bent over by a 30k just so we can get a taste of that sweet sweet aUEC. Why not take advantage of that? Why not reward the loyalty the backers have shown?

Personally, I can barely restrain myself from buying more crack (I mean ships). The only reason I don't is because I have no idea when this thing is going to become a Game - one that I can play. At the end of the day, whatever gets launched is going to be iterated upon pretty much indefinitely. We're going to have to wait either way, I'd just rather wait in style.

On the Design of Quantum Travel and Quantum Interdiction
Post at: Fr 31. Jul 2020, 18:41
By /u/ataraxic89

As we all know, Quantum travel is a central part of playing Star Citizen. If you are doing a lot of delivery/cargo missions it easily makes up half your play time and with the exception of new local delivery missions everyone has to spend time in QT.

For this reason I think its extremely important that CIG get the design for QT and QT Interdiction right.

Quantum Engineering

A QD field can be maintained without a problem automatically by the ships computer UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES. This would be handled by either the QD itself. Additional stability may be gained by the assignment of further computer blades.

Under these conditions it runs well enough and gets you from A to B just as it does currently.

However, in addition a QD engineer can access the QD and manually adjust the field in real time. In normal circumstances, this leads to a X% increase in speed in QT. The exact shape of this gameplay is not the point of this post. It could take many different forms and I would leave that up to CIG and the community work out separate from this initial discussion.

The amount of speed/efficiency increase that could be eke'd out would depend on things including the engineers skill, the component quality, and how close their base speed is to whatever maximum CIG wishes to impose. So for example, a very high quality QD may already be so close to the maximum that its not worth babying most of the time. But lower quality QT can gain more simply because they run so inefficiently as is. Again, that is just my thought and is not critical to the overall concept.

Instability

Some areas of space (perhaps near spatial distortions like jump points, black holes, or other weird phenomena) cause the QD field to be unstable.

In this case, it runs less efficiently or can even be so unstable that the bubble will collapse without active control by the QD engineer. Again, this could take many forms, such as moving slower, or using more fuel, but that is not the focus of this discussion and would again require significant iteration by CIG to get "just right".

Interdiction

Interdiction operates by creating a volume of artificially unstable space just like the natural ones. Similar to the QD, the interdiction module can run automatically or can be controlled directly by an interdiction specialist who actively tries to manipulate the instability in such a way as drop a ship out of QT. Again, the exact form of this gameplay would need iteration by CIG and could take many forms. In any form, it would create a direct interplay between interdictor and interdictie that is at least potentially skill based.

Since interdiction would not be guaranteed it would probably need to be a larger volume. Perhaps being forced out of QT would require a longer spool time than normal, allowing the interdictor to QT to their prey.

This instability could also make spooling up much harder. Again, potentially requiring the QD engineer to "fight" the instability to form a new bubble while his crewmates evade/fight the interdictor.

FAQ

The Jump point that just dropped has this redacted section that you can paste out into a text editor from the PDF. Not sure if I'll get in trouble for posting it here as a spoiler or subscriber only item but it looks like Latin perhaps?

Edit: The last redacted line says:

Edit 2: Realized I didn't mention this is specifically in reference to the Greycat ROC.

Hey! anyone out there has been playing it at 5120x1440 resolution? I'm just about to pull the trigger on my final decision and get the 49" inch Samsung G9 ... I will probably switch my gpu to the 3080ti once it's out, so gpu isn't the issue here.

How is the game behaving in such a wide aspect ratio? any problems?

Organization Combat Training and Crime Stats
Post at: Fr 31. Jul 2020, 20:11
By /u/MAJSimpson

I am sure this isn't a new idea, but I wanted to throw it out there anyway:

Organizations like to conduct combat operations training, which they can do when grouped together without the hazard of gaining a crime stat. Issue is that all org members can then see each others' tags - which hampers training.

What I would like to see from CIG is to set aside one moon without com-sat coverage, or anything of value, so orgs could train without having to deal with crime stats. Currently Delamar somewhat fits that intent, but much of it is glitchy and without gravity. Others have brought up ToW, but who knows when we'll see that.

It may be we have to wait until Pyro to see this.

Thoughts?
