Star Wars - Episode IX Apparently Is A Course Correction?

Some news making the rounds the last couple of days has several major Hollywood studios, Disney among them, courting J.J. Abrams, who is looking to land a half a billion-dollar megadeal with a big media company.

An article at Variety by Brent Lang and Matt Donnelly, states sources familiar with the potential deal say Abrams’ ambitions are "vast" and that the man behind “Star Wars - The Force Awakens” and the upcoming "Star Wars - Episode IX", is looking for the kind of deal that would include films, television series, digital content, music, games, consumer products, and theme park opportunities.

But in a blink and you'll miss it part of the article we get this little nugget of information. In the story, Lang and Donnelly state this...

Disney, one party wages, is in the pole position since the company has a strong foothold with Abrams thanks to his work in the “Star Wars” universe as a writer, executive producer, and director. He’s currently working on “Star Wars: Episode IX,” which has been billed as a course correction at Lucasfilm after spinoff films like “Solo” failed to meet the label’s high commercial expectations.

While we've heard Disney CEO Bob Iger and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy say things are changing on the production side of Star Wars, I don't think we've ever heard them use the words "course correction". The article is dumping the reason on Solo: Star Wars Story's failed commercial success but since the two are not related story wise and the trilogy is 2/3 of the way complete, I'm not seeing how these dots connect. The wheels are in motion as far as the sequel trilogy is concerned and they can't wipe the board clean at this point. Besides, there's almost no one who doesn't think the final episode in this series won't perform very well at the box office.

Sure, they could alter their marketing approach, something that hurt Solo, and replacing Colin Trevorrow with Abrams could be part of this course correction, but they can't exactly recast or tell a new story at this point. Until the product is up on the screen, we'll have the play the wait and see game I suppose.

What does everyone think? Is this just industry talk or will Episode IX be the first of a new direction for Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise?
