EA Acknowledges Star Wars: Battlefront II Didn't Go As Planned

Star Wars fans, if nothing else, will certainly let you know if they think something stinks. Well, the folks at EA learned that lesson the hard way when they launched Star Wars: Battlefront II at the end of 2017 and folks immediately took to the internet to express their displeasure.

Implementing the "loot box" scheme didn't help as fans all over the world cried foul and even certain governments got involved accusing the game of being nothing more than "unlicensed gambling" All of this and then EA achieved the dubious honor of garnering the most "downvotes" in the history of Reddit in response to their now famous "pride and accomplishment" post.

They dropped the "micro-transactions" almost immediately and then spent most of 2018 doing damage control making more characters available to everybody without going broke. Anyways, with that behind us now the developers at EA have posted a letter on their website, a sort of review/preview piece, and the mood is equal parts sombre and hopeful. In it, they do acknowledge mistakes were made on their part all the while keeping their eyes on the future.

Here's a excerpt from that letter...

However, the launch did not go as planned. With the understandable frustration around progression in the game, a decision to change the initial Crate system was made. A large part of the team was put on the task to fix the game’s economy and progression. This new system was implemented in March – one without random progression and where everything is unlockable through gameplay.

We’re happy with how Star Wars Battlefront II has improved over the course of 2018 and we hope you are, too. In our progress, we learned that in order to get content out the door to players at a steadier rate, we had to break out our large seasonal drops into smaller, more frequent updates.

“You can’t stop the change, any more than you can stop the suns from setting.”

You can see from the Battlefront II Roadmap, something they are particularly proud of, they have a lot of things planned for 2019, which clearly has them optimistic despite the up and down year they just experienced. With the recent release of the Obi-Wan Kenobi character and the soon to be released Count Dooku aka Darth Tyranus, things do seem to be on the up and up.

What does everybody think? Were you happy with the changes EA made to the game throughout 2018 and are you looking forward to what they have in store for the new year?
